I think they're an attempt to plug a gap in what a dA page can deliver, but the URL isn't so good (or as good as a personally named website). The speed of load is unacceptable - rather if I were looking for a photographer, I'd be frustrated by the load times. There's an element of "they can't even make the images load quickly enough..".
If you ask me, (and you didn't), they would do better to have a subscriber only option of having an alternative (pro) front end - with a series of inbuilt templates or the ability to use your own CSS if you want it. Combine that with pre-generated thumbnails and web-optimised main images and you'd have something hot - and a further, real, reason to keep a subscription going.

It's a pity that you have to wait quite long for a new picture to download. Maybe this will be faster in future.
