After having another heated discussion on the love or hate viewpoint of Corella’s that have been visiting Frankland for several weeks, I thought I had better verify my facts before arguing with anyone else.
So, I phoned the Conservation Wildlife Officer for this area and he confirmed that the Muir Corella’s are indeed protected because they are a rare and endangered species. Now I won’t mind the smirks I get when stating these facts because I know I’m right. Some people don’t seem to realize that these are the only Muir Corella’s in the world; because they see several hundred flying around our town, they think they are plentiful, when in reality, these birds number under 3,000 all told.
After telling the Officer of my concern for the birds here and feeling as though I was the only person in town who didn’t mind their noise and antics and had no thoughts of culling, he said he would join me and made an appointment to see me last Wednesday. He had also been to see the councillor who the locals have been complaining to, and was given a list of farms and vineyards to visit where these birds are said to be causing damage.
I’m now involved in watching and counting these birds several times a day and sending the results to the department of conservation. There will also be an article written for our local newspaper, telling people how we can learn to live with these birds. Isn’t that wonderful J
