The Rocks is where, in 1788, Australia's first European settlers-British convicts and their overseers-claimed the land and built their camp atop the sandstone cliffs.

The area has a colourful history where you can find some of the oldest surviving buildings in Sydney.

Thank you Irena. I was told that at one time it was suggested that the area be bulldozed and replaced with modern buildings. How wicked that would have been as the tourists love this area.

Sadly, yes! We were on our way to somewhere else when I photographed this and by the time we got back it was too late and it was closed again.
